Materials for speaking will, in most cases, be the same as materials for listening but it is important to remember that listening comes first. The sounds and patterns of the language must be internalized (through listening) before the child can comfortably attempt to reproduce them. “Comfortably” is an important concept in second language learning because, if the learner does not feel comfortable in producing the sounds the “affective barrier” (emotional resistance) comes up and learning is obstructed. Therefore, keep the sounds flowing and don’t expect your child to attempt to duplicate them for several weeks or months; if the child is very young, perhaps years. Definitely don’t put pressure on a child of any age to say things she/he is not comfortable with.
