We don’t expect our children to read and write before they learn to understand and produce spoken language so, of course, we shouldn’t expect children to read and write Spanish until they have understood and produced the sounds and patterns orally. In choosing reading and writing materials for your children, be sure the themes and subject matter have already been presented orally. One exception to this rule is that bilingual parents can present the oral model while pointing out the written form of the word and the illustration so that meaning is always present. You can start with the alphabet, proceed to vowel and consonant sounds, then syllables and finally words and phrases. Good luck!
